The project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, called “Fazenda Samba Lucala” is the largest one in the production of cereals at the level of Cuanza Norte and is being implemented, since last year, under the responsibility of the Gesterra company.

The farm received last Thursday the visit of the minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, António Francisco de Assis, as part of his three-day working visit to Cuanza Norte, with the purpose of finding out the degree of execution of the projects in the sector that are being implemented in the province.

To the press, the minister said that the same farm expects to harvest, in the current agricultural campaign, 7.000 tonnes of corn and 4.000 tonnes of soy, in a cultivated area of about two thousand hectares.

According to the minister, the intention is to transform Cuanza Norte into the “corn triangle” at the level of the northern region.

“In Cuanza Norte, a large-scale project is being born where the initial investment is from the State, which will make it possible to leverage this entire area. We can create a new triangle of corn and soybeans here. Normally, when we talk about the corn triangle, we have Huila, in the southern  region, and this may be our corn triangle in the northern region ”, he underlined.

The official listed the advantages that the region offers to leverage the project, namely, good altitude, abundant rain, low population density, which will reduce the incidence of eventual land conflicts, among others.

The project has a production capacity of 14.000 tonnes of corn/year and thousands of tonnes of soy, rice and pasta.

It also includes an integration component of the families that live in the area surrounding the farm, through the creation of social infrastructures and their incorporation into productive processes.

In this context, a dam capable of storing approximately three million cubic meters of water is being built to reinforce the irrigation system for agricultural fields and 50 houses for an equal number of families living around the farm.

The model house has already started to be built, while the works of water abstraction are to finish in November, when the harvests begin.

According to Gesterra's CEO, Carlos Paim, the project budgeted at approximately US $ 52 million, occupies a total area of three thousand hectares, two thousand of which are to be cultivated this year.

For the 2020/2021 agricultural season, the farm plans to increase the area under cultivation and double production.

The farm has five silos with a capacity of eight thousand tonnes each, for storing cereals such as corn, mash, strawberry, rice and soy.

The project has generated, so far, 100 jobs, a number that may increase in the subsequent phases of implementation.
