This is civil liability insurance, which, according to Elisa Gaspar, the chairperson of the Angolan Medical Association, comes at an important time to ensure protection for doctors, in cases where patients or family members take the health professional to court.

According to Elisa Gaspar, the agreement, which will last one year (renewable), will guarantee the psychological and professional conditions essential for the doctor to carry out his/her duties.

"I am aware that the work ahead of us is arduous and very demanding, so we hope that the agreement will be long-lasting and bring benefits to the class," she said.

In his turn, the advisor to the board of directors of ENSA, Muluta Prata, said that although professional liability insurance had been an existing product since the company was founded, it was the first time that doctors had joined.

Doctors, under civil law, if they cause damage which can be covered by professional indemnity insurance, are obliged to repair the damage or compensate the relatives or the patient himself.
