President vows to step up Covid-19 fight

Luanda - Angolan President João Lourenço pledged Thursday to continue combat the pandemic of Covid-19, aimed to curb the spread of virus in the communities.

In his speech of the State of the Nation delivered at the National Assembly, João Lourenço highlighted the immediate reaction of the Angolan authorities, in the fight against the pandemic.

The president spoke of creation of 161 rapid response teams and an increase in the capacity of beds in the health units.

He revealed that the capacity of beds in the country went from 625 to 5,000 units, while, in terms of intensive care, there was a rise from 289 to 1,229 beds.

As for the prevention and combat of the pandemic, the Executive has already spent Akz 43 billion kwanzas, in the acquisition of 640 tons of biosafety materials, laboratory equipment, tests, beds, more than 700 invasive and non-invasive ventilators and medicines, said the President of the Republic.

João Lourenço also highlighted the acquisition of five Molecular Biology and Serology laboratories, for the provinces of Huambo, Luanda, Lunda Norte and Uíge, increasing the country's daily capacity to 13,000 tests.

Covid-19 treatment centers were also built in the Special Economic Zone (ZEE), in Luanda, and field hospitals in Cabinda and Lunda Norte, with the others being installed in the provinces of Zaire, Uíge and Cunene, said João Lourenço.

He also announced 15, 367 multidisciplinary health professionals were trained in biosafety, handling cases from Covid-19, with a view to reducing the impact of the disease on them and improving the provision of health care to the population.
