Cunene province is located is located on the south region of Angola, and its capital is Ondjiva. It is found between the parallels 15º10'S and 17º24'S and the meridians 13º17'E and 17º23'E. it has 77,213km2. It is has a strip limitation of 460km with Namibia. The Cunene river international branch has 120km, starting from Monte Negro to Ruacana waterfalls. From there it flows 340km on the east until mark-55.

It was founded by General Pereira N'dença and was Huila district until July 10, 1970. This day became the celebration date of the province.

The population has Ambo origin and is essentially rural. Very different from the majority of Angolan population, people from Cunene are not from Bantu ethnic group. Their main ethnic language groups are:

- Ambos, Nyaneca-Nhumbi, Herero; Ovakwangala (Bushman), Mutuas. The last two are Bantu people.

- Oshikwanhama or Ambo language, is spoken in Kwanhama and Namacunde municipalities, while in other municipalities such as Ombadja, Cuvelai, Cahama and Curoca, the spoken languages are: Ovambadja, Nkumbi, Hsada, Muhimba, Muhakahona, Cokwe and Nganguela.



It has 77.213 km2 area and shares 460km border with Namibia.

The northern region of the province is less thermal mid arid, the south and southeast regions is mega thermal mid arid.

Cunene has only four months of heavy rain, which goes from November to February, because the region does not have many precipitations, and its quantity distribution is very irregular, a variation between 650mm on the north and 350 mm on the southeast

The annual medium temperature on the southwest is 24ºC, and 22, 2ºC on the north. There has been daily thermal amplitudes.



The number of people was about 750 thousand inhabitants, until last update in 2006. 


Natural Resources

Cunene province has a subsoil rich in minerals, including: red and black granite, iron and diamonds.
